The Lean, Mean Runner Bean's Favourite Running Books

These are some of the running-related titles I've enjoyed reading. There are no links to Amazon 'cos you should support your local bookshop.

Training.

The Lore of Running Tim Noakes ISBN 088011438X An extremely comprehensive tome by a sports science professional with a tremendous amount of detail. Some parts may be a bit dated (in my third edition, 1991) and some of the recommendations go against current wisdom as I perceive it but ultra running is covered in some detail.
Road Racing for Serious Runners Pete Pfitzinger & Scott Douglas ISBN 0880118180 This is an excellent source of information for devising a training plan (even if you don't subsequently follow it!) since it goes into more detail than mere schedules but doesn't overdo the science. My only gripe is that it doesn't cover ultra running (which isn't just an extension of marathoning).
Training for Ultras Andy Milroy (ed.) Road Runners Club. A collection of articles by some of the best ultra athletes.
Frank Shorter I quote: "I haven't written a book on how to train because my book would be less than one page long. It would say alternate hard and easy days, have one long run a week and do at least one session of speedwork a week."

Biographies and accounts of specific runs.

Running High Hugh Symonds ISBN 0948403918 Hugh's account of running all the Munroes (Scottish mountains over 3,000' high) before continuing with the English, Welsh and Irish three thousanders and covering the whole lot in eighty days.
Wild Trails to Far Horizons Mike Cudahy ISBN 004440381X A running autobiography, including when he become the first person to run the 270-mile Pennine Way in under three days.
The Road to Deca Bob Brown ISBN 1902662008

220 Magazine

Bob's autobiography of ten years of running, biking and swimming, culminating in fourth place in the world deca-ironman championships (24 mile swim, 1120 mile cycle, 262-mile run). His style is rather rough around the edges but he is very honest with his feelings which make it easy and compulsive reading. I was in tears at the end of it. You have got to read it to believe it - trust me!
The Pixie Run Damon Rodwell Privately published. A very readable account of Damon's three-week run along the hilly, 630-mile South West Coast Path in England.
The Southern Upland Shuffle Damon Rodwell Privately published. Only five-days this time ... sort of!

Happy reading!
